My teaching style is patient, thorough, and persistent. For beginning students I start with a simple five note scale, how to hold or sit with the instrument, and an easy tune such as mary had a little lamb or happy birthday; Some students get that in the first lesson and some take a couple weeks everyone has their own process. I like to students to work with method or etude books and have a folder or music notation notebook to keep notes and lessons, organization is up to the student. Read More

In our first lesson, I will ask that they bring something to record their lesson with. I will warm the student up vocally, in order to hear their range, capability and level of skills. I will then ask them to sing a little something for me, something they love that they're passionate about. From there I will be able to understand what they need as far as technique training. Depending on the students interest and needs I will typically introduce my beginner students with some scales and etudes from Simandl's 30 etudes book. As well Simandl Book one is a wonderful book to introduce the positions on the bass and has many helpful exercises inside. I'm a believer in the Simandl method and the etudes in particular are a wonderful way to learn the one and outs of especially orchestral bass playing. Read More
