Overview:
I am an eclectic composer, known primarily for my work in independent films, and a clarinettist with an extensive international performing and recording background. Proficient in many different styles, I am teaching my students to be open to any opportunity and am helping them realize their full creative potential. Wherever they would want to concentrate on a single task, like preparing for auditions for an orchestra or a music school, or are dreaming to join a classical/pop/rock/jazz/klezmer/folklore/arabic/gipsy/wedding band or ensemble - I will help.
EXPERIENCE
I am fortunate to have many opportunities to study with great teachers and perform diverse music in many different countries with wonderful musicians. Discovering music of different traditions and cultures helps understand the general purpose of music. What music is, why we need it and why we want to perform it. It is never about notes and scales, it is much more than that. This is what I am teaching my students. To become musicians, to be expressive, to communicate something through their performance, not just to play notes. Because, this is what listeners value and expect, and this is what give a performer a sense of satisfaction.
METHODS USED
In my experience, every student is different with their personality and goals in music. My job as a teacher is to find and implement the best path for a student to achieve their goals and to realize the most of their creative potential. Music is about self-expression and communicating feelings and ideas to listeners. There are many ways to achieve this through different styles or genres. Regardless, there are basic concepts, which are common to all styles. These have to be mastered before the style specialization can begin. In teaching clarinet I am using all the time-proven methods, as Baerman, Rosanoff or Close. For those, who are interested in jazz improvisation, I have adapted Mehegan or Russel methods.
LESSON STYLE
Clarinet is a wonderful instrument. It is not at all difficult to produce "a sound" on it. Producing a good sound, though, requires some work. Therefore, working on the sound quality is my first priority. Musicality is overall the most essential concept in music performance. This involves understanding of basic musical form elements and connecting them through logical phrasing. This is difficult to do without a good command of the sound quality. Technique is the least important, as with enough practice it is easily possible to learn the most technically difficult passages in one or two weeks. But performing them with a bad sound and non-musically, although technically perfect, will not make them sound good.
