I like to begin with the basics of singing technique, sight reading, and music theory. In order to be a successful singer, one must be proficient in all of these! I like to assign music by the second or third lesson, depending on the student's readiness and ability. I typically assign one classical and/or one musical theater song, depending on the student's interest. I start with only these two genres because I feel that singing something that the student can hear on the radio can be difficult to sing while implementing the new technique they are learning in lessons with me. I cater my lessons according to the students experience level. For beginners, I teach them a few chords, exercises and get them playing their favorite songs fairly quickly. This helps build some positive steps and motivates the student to keep playing. For more experienced students, I use the Berkley Guitar Method, teaching them chords, scales and simple songs which puts the theory into practice. I also teach students to read music, which helps them understand music theory and song structure. Read More

As a teacher, I try and strike a balance between structure and expression. And to that end, I believe a student needs to play trumpet every day- it doesn't have to be much, but because it's both physical and mental exercise, it's good to stay with it. For beginners and youngsters, 15-30min per day is usually a good target and as their expertise and enjoyment increase, practice time goes up seamlessly. Read More

My favorite piano method book for children is the Bastien Piano Basics Series. Alternately, I sometimes use the Faber & Faber Piano Adventures. For very young children (3-6) "My First Piano Adventure," a Faber publication, is my book of choice. For adults, I usually use Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course, though sometimes I skip method books and play pieces picked by the student. I strive to make my lessons fun! Learning to do something you love should be fun. I enjoy teaching students especially when they have a strong passion for what they are doing. I encourage them to practice daily, if nothing else. I always say, even if it's only 10 minutes a day, that's better than 30 minutes only one day of the week! My teaching experiences go back at least 15 years.  I started when I was in college and have never stopped teaching.  In my lessons I focus on the whole child.  Together we find out where their strengths lie and capitalize on those strengths.  Music is supposed to be fun and that is one of my goals is to keep it fun and exciting for the student.  I find it is best to expose the student to all types of music new and old and everything from classical to hip hop.
