There are several methods I use as a professor and they're all dependent on the student, their age and their goals. If they are younger, I like to employ elements of the Suzuki method because subjects like musical notation and theory might be too dense for the student. If the student has the aptitude/and or the discipline I can begin to apply a more systemic approach in terms of practice regiments like scales, practicing sight reading, their rhythmic feel, and even ear intonation and sight singing if the student is prepared for it. My instructional methods are customized to fit the individual student's preferences, goals and learning style. I never force my "agenda" or "method" on anyone. I cater to my students' guitar and musical goals. If a student wants to learn to read music, I generally suggest method books such as Hal Leonard Guitar Method or Alfred Guitar Method. Industry standard books will be assigned to the appropriate skill level. The scope for the beginner and intermediate level is to establish proper body, hand and fingering positions to facilitate and prepare for future and more complex music. The student will be encouraged as to select and play skill-based appropriate songs that are familiar and popular with them to keep piano lessons fun.   Flash or memory cards will be used to quickly bring the student up to speed for hand eye coordination with seeing the music note and playing the note on the piano.
