I have the same approach to teaching beginner and intermediate piano. Again, we learn our notes in five finger position and then we learn to read time signatures, notes in the treble clef, chords, and rhythms, as well as playing complete songs. When teaching piano for beginners I like to pick the leaning material that we'll use based on the individual because we all learn differently and I like to keep it fun so the student stays interested. I am a composer, pianist, and singer with extensive performing and teaching experience across the U.S. and in Germany and in France, Norway, and Sweden. I have performed as a soloist and ensemble member in operas and choruses and as a pianist have performed with singers, instrumentalists, choirs, and ballet companies across the U.S. and in Europe. I am also a choral conductor. From 2008 - 2019, I taught music theory, composition, voice, piano, choir, opera workshop, and varied classroom courses at Hiram College, a respected liberal arts college in Northeast Ohio. I have extensive choral, instrumental, vocal jazz ensemble, solo, and theater experience and have presented many recitals of art song, standards, and show tunes. In addition to my own performing, I held the position of bass section leader for the Seattle Jewish Chorale from 2010 2013 and over the years has served as soloist/section leader and music director for synagogues, and various other denominations. For beginning students, I strive to teach the basics of music theory while learning the fundamentals of producing characteristic tone on their instrument. I typically start by working through the Essential Elements method book and introduce solos, ensembles, and orchestral excerps when appropriate.
