Instruments: Violin Viola
I strongly believe in a flexible manner of instruction, depending on the student’s particular characteristics and musical temperament. Thus, my approach to teaching is different for each student. Some students possess a more “mechanical” way of thinking, and are not naturally comfortable expressing themselves in public. Others are more “artistic” and intuitive and do not possess the knowledge, organization and patience to overcome technical issues. Whether students are more “intuitive” or more “intellectual,” there is a common issue that many face: tension. Read More

My teaching style is extremely student centered. I help my students find the music that they love, and I help them play it musically. I focus on creating a nurturing environment where students can explore, take risks, and ask questions. I meld my content expertise with my ability to read people well and really help them find that path to success that works for THEM. There is no one-size-fits all approach to teaching music. Read More

My teaching style is firm yet easygoing and fun..I expect the student to have practiced and be ready to play their homework back to me. I use repetition quite a bit but that's the best way, I find, that someone learns. I also encourage them to investigate and practice things that have not necessarily been assigned in order to see how serious they are. In other words, when they're not practicing what I show them, I expect them to experiment and investigate the fretboard on their own and then if they do come across something cool, then we can build off that Read More
Instruments: Guitar
I've been teaching guitar and general music lessons since high school, where I would assist the music teacher in guitar and theory classes because of my advanced skill level. During my undergraduate studies in college, I put myself through school teaching private lessons in my home and at various music stores, churches, and performing arts schools, teaching around 200 students in 5 years. When I went back to school to get my masters degree, I was awarded an assistantship and taught music theory, music appreciation, jazz ensembles, and jazz improvisiation at the university, in addition to keeping a robust private guitar studio on the side. Goals are always tailored to individual student interests. I like to assign practice homework, which is a mix of technical exercises and song-based learning using student-preferred music. I love to watch students peel back the layers of the onion and discover how their favorite artists make music, from learning common chord progressions to transcribing solos note-for-note to imitating playing styles. Very important: Students should also be prepared to be on the receiving end of some high-quality dad jokes, which may or may not be sprinkled throughout homework assignments along with salt and pepper to taste. Instruments: Cello
At the bare minimum, there are four skills that one must become adept in in order to play cello. 1) Proper body movement and coordination 2) Left hand technique (the hand which determines the notes on the instrument) 3) Right hand technique (the hand which manipulates the bow and produces sound) 4) A basic grasp of music theory Every student of mine will be trained in the classical sense, and learn some classical repertoire, because classical technique on the cello is the foundation for any other style the student would like to perform. Instruments: Voice
I began teaching private voice lessons as a graduate student in college, and have now been teaching for about 5 years. I always try to bring my own performing experiences into the studio, as I believe this is beneficial to my students. I am still an active professional performer, so I'm always learning on the job and bringing new ideas into the studio. I am very passionate and energetic about singing and performing, and I encourage my students to bring passion and energy to their own singing. Read More
