During my time in Boston, I discovered a bustling bluegrass music scene and my focus switched to stringed instruments, namely the mandolin and the violin. One of the cool things about teaching is that every student is different and learns differently! I am usually able to assess each students level and pace within the first couple lessons. At the end of each lesson I will give them a realistic goal to achieve for the next lesson. Any improvement is improvement and I try and always recognize that. I start each student with the Frances Clark Series. This is terrific in introducing all musical components to the learner. It starts off right away using ALL the notes on the piano. Black notes are used exclusively in some repertoire. Each building block is built upon the next and it just nicely adds , in a non-threatening way to what the student has learned before. This varies depending on the student. I will typically design my lessons around the student's own individualized needs. I believe that there are many avenues that students can go down on the musical adventure. In the very beginning, there are basic, fundamental things that need to be learned, and repeated, but after that has been accomplished, it can go in many directions. I feel that if a student can make a personal connection with music that they love, and learn how to express that through their instrument of chouce, then their learning is both accelerated and enhanced. I play classical music every day and I like for my students to study a classical piece because it helps them develop technique rapidly. As a keyboard player, I emphasize the study of scales and arpeggios and playing them with both hands. My teaching style is one of flexibility, but still with expectations. I cater specifically to the needs of the student, and choose repertoire and exercises that will fit with their needs. I encourage positive self-assessments and self talk, and strongly believe that progress is based on collaborative efforts of the student and teacher.
