It is a wonderful book that will have the student playing a major scale in as little as a week! From there, I tend to gravitate towards the Rubank series, as they are often what's most used in schools for auditions, and covers several levels of playing. For beginner students Ill usually start with George Lawrences Stick Control and Ted Reeds Syncopation. Once I know they have a grasp of the fundamentals, Ill usually see what their interests are or what they are working on personally and help them improve and build upon those things. This could be repertoire for school or auditions or simply a song they have been trying to learn for a while. After graduating college, I was the resident trumpet at the Barter Theater in Abingdon, Virginia, before completing three contracts as a show band musician on board Celebrity Cruise ships. I have toured Europe with my university's top jazz ensemble, as well as toured the United States with two different professional drum corps, Carolina Crown and Jersey Surf. I perform approximately 50 gigs per month on piano and flute as a soloist or duo with my husband (who is a teacher and performer on classical guitar, also in the Musika family).
