Depending on how experienced the student is, I make sure to gauge where they are at regarding music theory and music history. Although the main goal of learning an instrument is to learn how to express yourself through music, it is important to understand how we can do that by having a solid understanding of theory and history. I've found that teaching students on a week-by-week basis through exercises that I create for them has been very successful, especially since a lot of method books are very limiting, and they expect every student to be starting out with the same baseline. My musical background originally consisted of classic rock and blues music. I then wanted to expand my pallet of music while attending Hunter College for my Bachelors of Music with a concentration in Jazz Performance, therefore, I began studying Jazz, Funk, and Latin music. 
This consisted of joining the college Big Band and many small Jazz and Contemporary music groups gaining much experience. I've had many opportunities to learn from some of the greatest musicians in the world and I am excited to share that knowledge with my students. Read More

Rather than academic performance, I want my students to love playing and feel personal satisfaction in the skills they have gained. Learning piano is a long-time investment so I try to encourage patience and perseverance. We set goals each week that help to motivate and keep track of the students progress. With younger students, the parents support is vital. Every week I make sure to keep them informed of what the student is working on so they can offer support and encouragement at home. Read More

I have been playing and studying guitar for 23 years and teaching for 5 years. The online courses I am currently taking are the first formal lessons of my life. I think this has given me a really patient teaching style that involves no stress. I have used various tools such as books and videos. Hundreds of which I still use today. I encourage hard work and consistent practice, but try to craft my excercizes to that the student will be fully interested and engaged. In the past, I have taught a couple of students who were beginners. One student was not American, and I had to teach her proper English pronunciation, while teaching her vocal technique. She was a hard worker, and came prepared the next week. Therefore, I could work at a faster level with her, then could I with another student who was progressing more slowly. If I can make a difference by teaching, in vocal technique, but also in the love of music, having fun, and finding and tapping into the creative part of my students, then I did my job.  Read More
