All students are assessed in reading music abilities as well as playing ability. Beginners are taken through a friendly course of learning about the instrument. For Classical Guitar I use Segovia Scales, Carulli Preludes, Sagreras, Guiliani Right Hand Studies, my own material from my book and some great compilation books to span the various genres of Classical Music to include the Renaissance Period, Baroque Period and Classic Period. My teaching style is individualized to meet the needs of the students. I like to use a portion of the first lesson to discuss the goals and musical interest of the student regardless of age. I encourage beginner students to learn basic theory to develop rudimentary skills. I then try to incorporate a student’s favorite music into the lesson plans. I pride myself on my ability to teach not only the standard method book sequences of etudes and exercises for the various instruments, but a curriculum that integrates improvisation and composition at all levels of age and ability. I believe in the importance of personalizing the music-making process and building student confidence in their own abilities to creatively express themselves.
