Generally, I find that students that can read music can understand music concepts a lot better that those that don't read music. That being said, there are students that don't want to learn to read and I understand that as well. For those students there are many methods available that can help them achieve what they want. With beginning students, I like to use a combination of Alfreds Basic method books. I like the variety it gives students from fundamentals to performance tunes, sight reading and music theory. Students will progress from playing on black keys only, hands separately, to simple five key songs very quickly. For beginner children, I like to use the Suzuki Method. For adults and intermediate to advanced children, I use a combination of books from different authors e.g. Taffanel Gaubert Flute Method, Marcel Moyse books, for technique development and also many pieces from the classical repertory. I also let the students choose pieces of any style that theyre interested in playing and they can handle.
