There are many acceptable method books for beginning students, however, I have found that if a student gets relatively comfortable on their instrument before trying to decipher a grand staff, they seem to enjoy the learning experience more. The hardest part of teaching music, in my opinion, is the educational content that isn't in a method book. Finding someone who can play your instrument better than you can often be more inspirational than finding a new piece that is slightly out of your comfort zone or using a method book that, at the end of the day, is supposed to help a student reach the ability level of the person the student aspires to be. For beginning students I use Faber and John Thompson books. Once the student improves of course we upgrade to more challenging songs and books. For adults I find out what they're interested in and instruct accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and always fun no matter what. I base my teaching method on my strong, enthusiastic, optimistic, patient, and loving character. My number one goal is to help my students accomplish their musical dreams, whether that be a classical pianist, a pop singer, the front person for a rock band, write songs or compose music for film, or just sing their favorite song of all time, whatever it takes, I will make sure that we get to the musical destination. It's important that each student progresses at their own pace.
