Teaching students HOW to read notes, and HOW to recognize them takes a few weeks so that's normally what i like to start with. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Alfreds Basic Piano Library method and theory books. Ideally, a new song is assigned every week and the student will practice daily. During lessons we will review the piece that the student has practiced, I will provide feedback, and we will move forward to a new skill.
