Band classes (10), Mariachi (13), Marching and Pep Band (15) were my first performance experiences, not subtle, but we all start somewhere. While in High school, I played in a Drum Bugle Corp., Eb cornet in a college marching and played Lead trumpet in a college Big Band the San Jose Earth Quakes band. In college I decided on a life in music as a studio trumpet artist. I performed as a member of Mariachi, Funk, Soul, RB, Pop, Rock, Recording, Show Bands Theatre Orchestras, and, have been fortunate to play with some of the people whose musical styles I admire and emulate. I want them to leave their final lesson feeling the same way, but at a more advanced level than when they first arrived. They don't need to be professional level when they leave, but I want them to feel as though they learned some valuable things as my student and want to either continue learning elsewhere or feel content about what they have learned and are ready to move on to other things. I started teaching horn in 1976 and have taught ever since. Students are to perform not only a recital if possible or play a solo as part of a musical program but to play in a musical organization if possible. My teaching began teaching in the US Army with under performing horn players with technique, hand positioning and air control. The instruction continued through 19 years as an enlisted Army musician. I am very intuitive with how my students are feeling about their own progress and constantly check in with them to see how they feel about their progress and accomplishments. I set goals for my students, ensure that they practice to reach them on a regular basis, and then celebrate their success with positive reinforcement. I began teaching piano and clarinet while I was in high school. I currently teach 1st grade in the Fairfield area as well as have a few private students. My students have been selected for county honor bands, all northern honor bands, all state honor bands and even all national honor bands. I encourage regular practice and always find music that peaks their interests and makes them want to practice while also working on foundational skills. Read More
