I believe that a strong foundation is essential for steady progress and confident performance. A comprehensive approach is my preference. Therefore, when I teach piano, I prefer Faber and Faber Piano Adventures paired with A Dozen a Day for added technique. Since many students in this school district are in band or orchestra, I usually use Essential Elements for Strings, Brass, and Woodwinds. Determining the range of an individuals learning styles and how they operate allows me to better gauge their needs and accomplishments. whether I should be quite literal, or use analogies, metaphors and similes. Knowing a students aural depth helps me guide listening. An idea of kinetic aptitude and tendencies helps me construct the "procedural memory" of playing efficiently. I have been teaching for 20 years, with my own business for 10 years. My teaching style is very student centered. This allows me to focus on their unique abilities and interests while building a solid musical foundation. Individualized teaching is my passion. I adapt my teaching style to each students' learning style and then teach them how to express themselves individually through music. While playing music itself is quite enjoyable, it is absolutely essential that each student progresses at their own pace.
