I started playing the saxophone in the 5th grade. In 2011, I graduated from Miami University with Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education. After working in education as a substitute teacher for 6+ years, I am pursuing a career change. However, I still have a deep passion for music and the saxophone. For young beginners, I usually start with simple note reading so that they can begin playing tunes right away. When children realize that they can play "Happy Birthday" or "Jingle Bells" after just a couple of lessons, their interest level increases. For older students, I tend to ask "What does playing the guitar look like to you? What do you imagine yourself doing when you ponder it?" I also encourage performances and for those, I let students choose works (classical, romantic, contemporary, jazz, or pop) based on skill level and personal interest.
