In my lessons I use snare drum method books such as Mitchell Peters Intermediate Book or Stick Control by George Stone to teach reading and basic hand technique.  Once I feel the student is proficient in reading and technique I move on to drumset coordination books as well as learning drum parts to the students favorite music.  I also teach techniques for xylophone, tympani and other classical percussion instruments.  I have an extensive library of music books and techniques so if one method doesn't work I have no problem customizing my lesson plan to fit the student's need. As a trumpet player with 13+ years of experience performing, recording, and learning from many mentors of different backgrounds, I know how difficult and frustrating the trumpet can be. For beginning students who are not musically literate, I emphasize a program that focuses on the aquisition of skills to read music proficiently followed by a basic program that helps students get the basics of their instrument down. For intermediate musicians, I focus more on taking their basic skills and expanding on them to help them discover new abilities and progress further in their musical development. I typically use a lot from my marching band days to get students warmed up and really fine tune their technique and coordination. From there it truly depends on the student's goals and skill levels. I like to work on specific songs the student wants to learn or use other pieces that apply directly to what the student is trying to achieve.
