As with methods, I do not have one lesson style.  My approach with a three year old is different than with a seventy year old. I began teaching during the end of my college years, when an assignment for a pedagogy class on voice included taking on a student for several months and working with them. I found the experience to be fulfilling and self revealing as to how I understood my own concept of singing. Since then, I have recently begun teaching a number of students who, thanks to my experiences as a resident artist with an opera company and recent performances with festivals, I feel have more to gain from me. I am an active member of Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC). My students take the Certificate of Merit (CM) test annually in performance, theory, sight-reading and ear training. Taking the CM test is optional but highly recommended. I also make sure my students have plenty of chances at performing on stage at recitals by organizing my own recitals or joining forces with other MTAC teachers. Having a recital to practice for is a great motivation for students to practice daily and gives the parents the chance to see their children's accomplishments. Read More

I believe creativity and passion are the most important things that a teacher could help build for their students. Personally, I do not like to push my students too hard because I believe it is important to keep young kids being interested in the instrument, instead of being pushed to practice and quickly losing their patience. During my study in Shanghai, I started teaching middle school wind ensembles as well as saxophone and clarinet lessons. Starting 2012, I also have been teaching jazz combos and saxophone ensembles for Shanghai International Saxophone and Jazz Summer Camp. I designed my course on the topic of jazz history while I was in Boston. I use the Suzuki method with all students, however, supplemental material is also used as the student ages and moves through the repertoire. As the student begins to explore their instrument and experiment with different styles, techniques, and repertoire I help guide the student along their musical journey and teach the student the necessary skills to successfully perform/play the piece. Perfection isn't necessary but a good grasp on the concepts and skills that are used across different pieces and applied to repertoire that is picked up in the future. Read More

For children who are just starting, I use Bastien Piano Basics Primer Level-Level 2. From here, students graduate to selections primarily from Bach, Chopin and Beethoven. For adults I use Alfred's beginner adult course. I also supplement these books with several books that I have in my personal library, such as Keith's Snell's Essential Piano Repertoire. For scales I use Keith Snell's series and for technique I use Schaum's Fingerpower series. Read More
