My past students would probably say I am overall a nice guy but incredibly picky when it comes to perfecting a piece and hold each of my students to a very high standard. For beginning students who are completely new to the world of music, I typically start them with exercises and theory found in Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. This introduces them to the foundations of the guitar, such as basic chords, chord progressions, and the musical alphabet. Once they have the necessary understanding of the fundamentals, I then like to find out what music the student is interested in learning and apply these foundations in musical pieces they are familiar with. I keep it light and simple. In lessons, I am a listener as well as a teacher. I use the students own words to work through music. I encourage students to focus on what things feel like, and describe them, so that we can focus on what is working well! My style of teaching is based in milestone achievements. We determine the players current level and identify their goals. Once I have an idea of what the student wants to accomplish it becomes easy to customize a plan for each student's development. Once the student has demonstrated that he or she is practicing independently and making forward progress with the lessons, I add more complex musical arrangements to further improve reading and technique.
