For young children, I start with the use of their 10 fingers. We do finger exercises using Middle C as the center and exercise the fingers in up and down playing at the piano. I use the Faber method of study which is fantastic, is graded, introduces all kinds of pieces and a lot of theory. It is a very interesting course and my students do very well using it. I am an adjunct faculty member at NYU, teaching saxophone, clarinet, and keyboard, and music theory. Many students are not sure what they want to learn, and this is to be expected.
