With beginners, I always explore the very basics with them. This means we work on breathing and embrochure formation together. Along with this, we also learn the basics of reading music. From there on out, I use Breeze Easy Trumpet Method, Arban, Clarke, Irons, Bai Lin, Caruso, and Stamp to develop fundamental technique, based on what I think each student needs. My style is based mostly in questions I ask of the student, asking them what they're thinking, feeling, and experiencing as they play certain passages or exercises. For beginner students I like to start away from books and notation and work on sound production and call and response. This is a way to get the ear working and to have some fun with potentially the most daunting part of learning an instrument. Once we have mastered that we move to writen notation and try to match what we have been doing without the book. When a student has progressed towards a good understanding of music notation I will encourage solo repertoire and other projects that are of interest of the students based upon a common goal we have set for our time together.
