I like to spend a little bit of time assessing what level a student is at so I can appropriately guide them to where they need and want to be. Early on I stress the importance of self evaluation and critical thinking, as it is priceless to be able to teach oneself using these analytical skills. Learning music is like building a pyramid that will never have a peak, blocks are added again and again and always built on the progress of the past but there is never a point where a student has "completed" music.
