For beginner piano students, I have two methods books that I use. For young children, I use the Bastion Piano Basics series. It is colorful, fun, and exciting for young learners. It is also very informative, so parents can help their young ones practice if they need the help! I like to start by exploring where the student is at in their musical education and what they are looking to study in private lessons. From there, we build the lesson around them! Once we’ve established where to begin, I’ll ask the student to choose a piece they’d like to perform and I’ll assign them a piece of my own choice as well. I have been teaching in some capacity since college. I have directed a high-school praise team and taught guitar, piano, and recorder in a corrections institute. One of my earliest students was a former band-mate. One of the early lessons is the importance of practice. He saw for the first time my work ethic and commitment to daily practice.
