I recently finished my studies to receive my Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy degree from Sam Houston State University. At SHSU I gained experience working with a variety of clientele including those diagnosed with autism, dementia, traumatic brain injury (TBI), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and spina bifida. I also provided live percussion music with the Creative Movement Program with the dance department at Sam Houston State University. The Piano Adventure Series is great because the song arrangements have tiered piano proficiency for beginner to intermediate players. After students work in these books, other repertoire can be added to perform for holidays and recitals. I usually start with breathing exercises and vocalises for all students. I also use the exercise books Concone and Sieber. After the student has grasped the breathing and the coordination of the vocalises we move on to repertoire that is age appropriate. I encourage my students to sing in Italian as this helps them to acquire a proper technique because Italian uses pure vowels. I have studied with some great teachers and feel like I need to pass on those methods to the next generation of musicians. Read More

No matter the skill level, fundamentals are of importance. As brass players we are using flesh against metal, learning how to do so correctly is vital. I always start with a breakdown of what should be included in their daily fundamentals, from long tones to lip slurs to scales and so on. It is as vital as an athlete stretching and conditioning for their health. Throughout our lessons we will vary the fundamentals, showing them different exercises so that we make sure not to fall in a routine but rather focus on the role that the fundamentals play.
