For over 47 years I have played and instructed guitar. I began playing back in September of 1967 at the age of 10, on an inexpensive acoustic guitar purchased by my father from a pawn shop. I am self taught and learned to play by watching other guitarists, reading guitar instructional books, and listening to record albums. As I alluded to previously, I lean much more towards the traditional end of the spectrum in regards to teaching. That being said, I also make a concerted effort to make my piano lessons fun and engaging for the student. I have had the great fortune of getting to study the piano under some really kind and inspiring people, and I try to emulate them the best I can. I create custom lesson plans for each student, for unlike the trombone or the cello, everyone's voice is considerably different. I will first hear the students goals, and where they want to go, or what they want to do. Then, I will assess where they are at, and then customize lesson plans to take them from where they are to where they want to go. I will do this by giving them different songs to learn. Read More

I enjoy playing with the student at times and I tend to move around frequently. This allows me to demonstrate styles while watching the student's enbouchure, posture, angles, and instrument position from every angle. I am a professional licensed educator, as well as, a mother of two grown children, both of which influence my teaching method. My style is individualized to the student's personality - what works for one may not work for another. One student may be very driven to learn theory and do written homework, while another may find written homework to be agonizing but love learning new pieces of music - I will work with both styles, with the same result - each student learns to play the instrument and learns the required theory to be able to play the piano, while hopefully enjoying it along the way! For beginners, I like to start with the Rubank method books, which progress pretty rapidly. I also focus on tone production and scales as we move along at the level of the individual student. I gauge the speed at which we move based on the student in question, and prepare a practice routine for each student based on how much time they have to practice each day. For an intermediate to advanced student, I work with more the more advanced Rubank method books, and suggest solo literature appropriate for them to prepare. Read More

With consistent practice on both fundamentals and repertoire, I believe that anybody can learn how to play an instrument. Learning an instrument is like building your dream house. You start start by building a strong foundation through fundamentals and then by working over a period of time, your dream house will start to become a reality.
