I ask students to keep a journal of their goals and practice time focus so we can measure how we're working to our goal. For my methods of teaching, I work on rudiments and work on basics for percussion. Even if the student has played percussion for years, I still want them to understand the fundementals for the instrument. As soon as the student is finished with rudiments, I want them to look at the different etudes in a percussion book that I will work off of for each meeting. Books I use for teaching Piano is the Piano Adventures series of books by Nancy and Randall Faber, which is a great lesson book and a good basic piano method for beginners through intermediate level students. For guitar I use the Hal Leonard Incredible Chord Finder and the Warren Nunes Jazz guitar Rhythm and Background Chords and the Solo Patterns book.
