I customize my curriculum to the needs of the student and the things they would like to learn. From basic note and chords to substitutions and harmony. Within that I always give an understanding of basic music theory in a practical way that the student can apply to their playing. . For those who want to go deeper in music I teach advanced concepts, improvisation and song writing. For beginning students I mix basic chords and melody to help them play songs that they can enjoy. If the student is a beginner, I suggest just playing one note for a short time and expand that to three notes. This can be done very quickly, then most students can move to easy tunes on a single sheet of music. If the student in not a beginner, advanced or intermediate I have to do a performance ability assessment. Read More

I have been teaching for 20 years, with my own business for 10 years. My teaching style is very student centered. This allows me to focus on their unique abilities and interests while building a solid musical foundation. Individualized teaching is my passion. I adapt my teaching style to each students' learning style and then teach them how to express themselves individually through music. I still use traditional methods to build good technique and practice habits, but allow my students to bring their own interests' into our lessons. Read More

Goals are an essential part of teaching. Students need something to work toward and I want those goals to be realistic and motivate the student to work towards them. Having a basic outline of a lesson plan is important and so is the flexibility to adjust it to fit the individual needs of the student. My goal is not to have the best playing students, but to have students with the most growth in their own abilities. Read More

For beginning students, I like to use either standard of excellence or essential elements. I also pull from my own personal library or will ask to provide materials based on the students needs. Lessons are structured with some type of warm up, a technique and solo performance, as well as practicing skills on sight reading. This is good for both adults and kids. I also like to set goals at each lesson and have a time frame of what the expectations are for the following lesson. Read More

My fundamental philosophy is to provide each student with a methodical approach to achieving, developing and maintaining a well balanced set of skills. Beyond the technique of how to make "your best" sound, and the efforts to build skills, I make efforts to instill the concept of "Procedural Memory" in creating, developing and expanding a "complete sense of flow in playing." Have a plan and always play musically. It's "HOW" you practice that counts! Read More
