The first lesson almost never results in the ability to play anything because it's so important to avoid practicing with improper technique. First the student must learn hand position, how to support the guitar, how to hold the pick and more before a note can be played. I earned a bachelors degree in music composition and studied classical guitar in college. I taught private lessons off and on for several years before beginning teaching at a Music Studio in Columbus, Ohio. For younger students, I typically start teaching from Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, as it provides a comprehensive method for learning the basics on the saxophne. Once my students have mastered this material, I begin to introduce solo repertoire. For older students, I teach from etude books such as Selected Studies for Saxophone by H. Voxman or Jazz Conception by Jim Snidero. In addition to learning from etudes, students will develop their solo repertoire. Read More
