For beginners I like to have a method books such as Alfreds or Hal Leonards and occasionally supplement with an easy piece to hold their interest. Its important for them to have something to show as soon as possible. As the student advances, the Mickey Baker books are good for the interested jazz student. The handouts are usully about warm-up routines (excercises of tone, fingering techniques, tonging excercises, vibrato and so on). It depens on the level of the students. At the start of my junior year of high school, I began teaching piano to a handful of students in my small town. It was such an exciting experience! I taught a few very young students whose moms wanted them to try out the instrument and learn some fundamentals, and I taught a few older students who just wanted to know how to play some of their favorite songs.
