During my Air Force Years I attended the University of Maryland with my primary focus on musical theatre. I typically start students who don’t know how to read music with Kevin Olsen‘s book called “The Perfect Start.” I then supplement that with my own approaches to teaching to note reading, musicianship, theory, sight singing, and composition. After a few months, the student will be transferred over to such books as Fabre and Fabre.” I truly try and streamline a students experience and lessons towards pieces and music they are interested in playing. For beginners, I start with Suzuki school violin and guitar books. Once the student has a grasp of the fundamentals I introduce pieces or may have the student pick out a pice they'd like to work on. For more intermediate players I generally try to help them with music they may already be working on and give them studies to practice relevant techniques. Since lessons are tailored to the individual student's goals, it's going to be a little more laid back. Success is measured differently for each student.
