Music has been part of my life from a yound age. I started playing piano when I was five. At age nine I entered St. Thomas Choir School, a boarding choir school in midtown Manhattan. At age fourteen I started studying music theory and composition with a local kappelmeister. In university I continued to study classical theory at Syracuse University and then Jazz Theory at Hampshire College. For beginning students I typically start them off with a very simple method of repetition and mirror working first with one hand on the instrument then progressing to fret work. The fundamentals may seem tedious but they are necessary to reach a basic playing level in a short amount of time. For beginning and intermediate students I like to teach out of the Rubank Method books. They have pieces that focus on one issue or another and are short enough to encourage students to simply become used to the idea of practicing every day. Once the student has some basic fundamentals it is always nice to work on a piece of repertoire. Again certain challeges are adressed and met through this as well, but the goal is also to have a chance to perform it, displaying a practical application to the student's accomplishments and hopefully encouraging the student to become further interested.
