My style involves around having a "recital" piece that we work on at all times, as well as technical exercises and different games to increase music theory, rhythm, sight reading, ear training, etc. We set goals and work to accomplish them in a timely manner. I always take time to make sure you as the student are comprehending what I'm explaining to you. I am fond of using method books such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or Bruce Peterson's Standard of Excellence (or, with school children in a band program, whatever their method book may be), but I also like to bring separate handouts or sheets of exercises, drills, and songs that I have created over the years. For true beginners, it is so important to develop a strong foundation for breathing, posture, embouchure, and finger position. For example, to help practice deep breathing, I have my students lay down on the ground with a book on their stomach. Then, I will ask them to breath while trying to move the book up and down. I first started working with children when I was attending Florida State College. I took a course on elementary education, and did some field work at a local elementary school. It was there that I found out how much I really loved kids. I had a wonderful time in the classroom. I have taught music classes (choir, music theory, hand bells, recorders, and general music) for Kindergarten-10th grade for seven years, and I have taught private music lessons for over 10 years. I have taught students as young as five years old, and I've had students well into their retirement years as well. Everyone can enjoy learning about music; that's what makes music so unique and amazing.
