My first teaching experience, though not musical, was as a martial arts instructor at the Cuong Nhu dojo I attended from age 7 to 18. I was a teachers assistant by age 12 and would lead childrens and adult classes up to twice a week by age 14. Long-term goals may have to do with technique--for voice, examples may be releasing tension or singing with proper breath support. Short term goals are more linked to repertoire and can be technical or musical. An example on the piano may be playing through a piece with a particular metronome marking. As percussion does not consist of one instrument but of hundreds, methodology changes depending on which we are discussing. for anything requiring drum sticks (snare drum, bass drum, timbales, drumset), the fundamentals and rudiments come first.
