My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching friends and kids at church 12 years ago. I have been teaching students off and on in my home or at church for the last 4 years. I encourage students to make time for regular practice on a consistent schedule. Another one of my key points I like to emphasize for younger students and adults is less is more as it tends to help the students progress and gain a passion for the instrument in its most simplistic form. For beginning students I would begin with a basic introduction of the instrument and its history. I believe that each instrument has a story to tell! I use a basic book such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or whatever material the student's band director is using. Flexibility is the key. Playing an instrument should be fun and that is certainly a goal for students of all ages. Practice is the key to success for beginners or more advanced players. Read More

My teaching methods are relatively universal. With younger students, I focus more on learning to have fun while learning about their instrument at the same time. The more fun they're having, the more likely they are to stick to it. For adults, I keep this same philosophy in tact, but incorporate more technique, theory, and performance practice into our sessions in order to facilitate the learning curve. Once I know what my student enjoys about music, I tailor my lessons around that. Read More

I've been playing music my whole life. My father is my biggest inspiration. I started my training at Peabody when I was 5 years old in their music exploratory program. Next I studied cello for many years. When I was a teenager about 13 I started trying to hold my cello sideways and that's hone my father bought me an electric bass. In the NAVY I picked up the guitar and I've been professionally playing for over 25 years. Read More

Always start where the student is, and take them from there. Always encourage and inspire students to be better than yesterday. Progress, no matter the amount, is progress. Take your own pace. If you have a specific deadline, for example a college audition, you will have to commit to practicing more than usual and we will create a plan of action. Also, I do write letters of recommendation. Celebrating daily practice to turn goals into accomplishments, I love seeing my students learn, harness their determination to do more, learn more, and I love seeing my students happy with their self-worth. I have a very patient teaching style. I think have a calm cool manner has benefitted my students in the past because feeling pressure can be hard and make the lesson not as fun. To me, learning a new instrument should be soothing and fun and it should be rewarding also. I also communicate with my students to see what I can do to help them learn and recommend different techniques that help me learn. Read More

After graduating from high school, I chose to further my education by studying music at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. This decision marked an important turning point in my development as a musician. At the College of Charleston, I was immersed in a rigorous academic and artistic environment that challenged me to refine my craft and expand my musical understanding. Through coursework, ensemble participation, and performance opportunities, I gained a deeper appreciation for music theory, history, and composition, as well as the professional expectations of a working musician.
