Once my younger students have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for their first recital performance. Once that is accomplished, together we develop a plan that fits the needs and goals of that student. For beginning students who are children, I typically assign musical theater pieces that will develop their skill and technique but not be too daunting for early singers. For students of all ages, I like to lead with the quote from Marcel Moyse; "Practicing is a matter a time, patience and intelligent work", for I believe that once this is applied to the idea of practicing and general encounters with ones instrument, then success and progress is guaranteed. In order to communicate musical ideas most effectively, I feel it is equally as essential to develop the students ear as well as their reading abilities.Each student will receive a personally customized work packet that includes sheet music, worksheets, and possibly audio/video samples. The packet implements training techniques exercises that will develop the students reading skills and ear-training, along with basic theory.The work packets also include sheet music to songs chosen by the students, in order allow them to apply their techniques in ways that are self-fulfilling.
