I include the parents as well in this conversation for the younger students, as I find that some parents want their children to learn how to read beginning at a young age. Technique as well as theory are equally important. It is also important to have fun while learning. I like to use the Hal Leonard lesson books combined with excersises that I have created. I can also teach songs requested by students and explain and demonstrate how theory and technique apply to the tune. I am a pianist/musician who is passionate about teaching and sharing my love of music. I grew up in Mexico City and won a scholarship to study at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy. I then continued my studies at The Oberlin Conservatory and earned a Master's Degree at The Boston Conservatory. I like to begin with the basics of singing technique, sight reading, and music theory. In order to be a successful singer, one must be proficient in all of these! I like to assign music by the second or third lesson, depending on the student's readiness and ability. I typically assign one classical and/or one musical theater song, depending on the student's interest. I start with only these two genres because I feel that singing something that the student can hear on the radio can be difficult to sing while implementing the new technique they are learning in lessons with me.
