ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Studied for 2 years at Hartford Conservatory of Music One semester at Atlanta Institute of Music

Overview:
I'm a very dedicated and patient teacher who will go above and beyond to make sure my students succeed. I've learned a lot about teaching through my own teachers and mentors including Alex Skolnick (Testament, Trans-Siberian Orchestra), Mike Kevetoes, Jim Martin etc... I've always had a deep passion for music and I love helping people discover their own passion for music and playing guitar. This lead me to getting a more formal education to improve my skills so I could help even more students. I then went on to create some of my own curriculum that is focused more around playing music then tons of boring exercises. I teach the skills needed to play guitar but ALSO how to apply these skills to the music itself. Seeing students faces after they can play along with their favorite songs is extremely rewarding. This is why I teach!
EXPERIENCE
I've been playing for 40 years and teaching for around 15 years. I started teaching at Corner Music School in the beginning and then moved to teaching out of my own home studio. Here at the studio student get to play through professional quality amps, effects, recording gear etc... I also team up students into what I call Guitar Teams where students of similar ages and playing abilities get to jam on songs together with a virtual backing band. They get to feel what it would be like to play in an actual band. Students LOVE this! Of course for in-home students I can't do all of this but we can still record songs and create cool videos of their performances. They can even do a private in-home concerts for their family and friends!
METHODS USED
I use a combination of my own teaching curriculum, Hal Leanoards Method books, which are full of modern riffs by some of today's top Rock and Pop artists, Troy Stetina methods for my Hard Rock/Metal students, Musicians Institute materials, Guitar for Kids for the younger ones etc... While I draw from a variety of material the lessons are very focused. I learn what each students goals are along with how they best learn and we formulate a solid plan of attack. Each week they are e-mailed detailed lesson notes on what and how they should practice during the week. This includes backing tracks, pdf's and additional instructional videos in their own personal online classroom. The focus in on giving students the skills needed to succeed while still keeping things fun and engaging through playing music they enjoy and WANT to learn!
LESSON STYLE
My Teaching style is both focused and laid back. While this may sound like complete opposites from each other and wouldn't work well together, it actually does work very well. I focus a lot on figuring out what the student really wants to learn and what will keep them motivated. I'll instill the importance of consistent practice and working hard to achieve their goals but at the same time it all still needs to be fun! How I'm more laid back is I don't scold and put down students because they didn't achieve a certain amount of practice or they have not completed all of their assignments during the week. I realize that things come up, adults are very active and sometimes life gets in the way, sports and homework take up time etc... What I do instead is teach them how to take their limited amount of time and maximize it. I encourage them to find time to practice where ever or whenever they can. If you practice then you will improve, if you are improving then you will become even more motivated to practice. So I take a more encouraging and positive approach to teaching students. I'm very patient in the lessons themselves and I focus a lot on making sure students are capable of continuing to learn when they are at home, which the online classroom really helps a lot with also. If they are ever stuck then they can contact me anytime between lessons for extra help. I'm always their for my students!
