The way I see it, what is the point of learning an instrument, if one doesn't have a love of music in general. I believe it is essential to have a love of all kinds of music, be it classical, rock, pop, or jazz. I encourage my students to listen to as much music as they can get there hands on, especially classical cello works. For the beginning drum set student, I start by establishing a fundamental understanding of rhythm and reading rhythm before transitioning directily to drum set.
