Instruments: Voice
A typical lesson begins with breathing exercises and a comprehensive vocal warmup. This is usually where we focus on the "mechanics" of singing to make sure the voice stays healthy. Next, we will typically do some ear-training and harmony work, followed by songs! I try to help students develop a diverse repertoire of music that fits their goals. Most students have 3 songs that they are working on at a time: 1) a challenge song: something that's a bit difficult and has significant room for growth, 2) a fun song: a current favorite that the student picks for herself/himself, and 3) a teacher's choice song: one that I choose for the student. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student progress, or better yet, develop a love for music. When my students succeed, I feel as though I have. I feel as though every student should progress at their own pace and music especially should not be something that stresses the student out (especially when it is art). I have had many teachers that were very old-fashioned and harsh in their ways and this can give the student a distaste for music. Read More

I have been teaching music since I attended high school and have continued to do so for the past 6 years. Improvisation and expression are key points I like to emphasize in all my students, as anyone can sit down and practice scales until their fingers fall off, but being able to express yourself through a musical instrument takes dedicated work and direction. My students are made to create as much as they are made to perform, as understanding how music works and the theory behind it is achievable regardless of level or age. Read More

There are many method books available, one that I have used is "Piano Adventures" by Nancy and Randall Faber. There are many series of books now available with varied styles of music from beginning to intermediate levels such as those by Martha Mier, Robert Vandall and Christopher. Very young students and sometimes even those who are older have difficulty understanding musical notation and it is useful to teach them by rote while also improving reading skills. Read More

I love most when students know the joy of performing music really well. I am not one to let students stagnate, but as the saying goes, "If it's not fun, why do it?" I firmly believe that my biggest job as a teacher is to help students learn to love the music that they are playing, not necessarily to only play "fun" music but to develop a deep love for music that is challenging and rewarding. My Teaching style is both focused and laid back. While this may sound like complete opposites from each other and wouldn't work well together, it actually does work very well. I focus a lot on figuring out what the student really wants to learn and what will keep them motivated. I'll instill the importance of consistent practice and working hard to achieve their goals but at the same time it all still needs to be fun! Read More
