Whatever I am teaching someone, I aim to present the material in the most interesting/fun way possible. I teach with authentic enthusiasm because of the joy that teaching provides. I am pretty easy going when it comes to teaching because it conveys patient, positive vibes. I don't want my to students to be afraid to make mistakes; something that happens when you take a strict, authoritarian approach. Rather, I prefer to covet a positive, free, fun learning environment. After PipSqueak disbanded, I finished high-school exploring ska and punk music in the band PickUpChix, in which I did my first out-of-state tours, taking a van from Tulsa to play college shows as far as St. Louis. Outside of the band, I challenged myself to learn the rhythmic signatures among other cliques of friends, from the speedy double-kick footwork of death metal to the machine-rhythms of 90s hip-hop. I went to Oberlin College in Ohio to work w/ conservatory-grade musicians from globally varied styles and backgrounds. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson, while also gently pushing them to take their abilities to the next level when I see that they are ready to. In addition, acknowledging accomplishments help fuel students' desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. Read More

I typically start woodwind students with the Standard of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method series. I like to use the Faber Piano Adventures Series or the Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course for piano instruction. In addition to the method book, I like to incorporate physical/breathing exercises, supplemental warm-ups, sight-reading, music theory worksheets, and student selected repertoire in lessons. I also encourage students to create their own compositions. In the past, I have digitally recorded many of my students' compositions and have really enjoyed encouraging students to express themselves through original composition. Read More

Learning a musical instrument is very challenging and for most of us it doesn't come naturally. It's unfortunate when students become frustrated too quickly in the process and decide to quit out of frustration. In my style of teaching, it's very important that students feel some level of success no matter where they are in their own musical journey. Often I will perform lesson materials in unison along with students to help them if they are feeling anxious or uncomfortable. Read More
