My favorate way to start a teacher student relationship is to have the student just sit on the drums and let loose for me. This gives me a good idea of where to start with the student and to see what he/shes preferences are. I like to focus strongly on technique, fundimentals, and music theory. My overall goal is to build the students skills and confidence to be able to sit in and jam in any kind of situation Read More

I encourage my students to be technically proficient, musically literate, and good listeners. Having these core fundamentals down prepares my students to be able to play any style of music they choose. Lessons are always customized to fit the musical preferences of the student. I use my preferred method books but am able to incorporate the books the student already owns within the lesson plans. I encourage the use of technology such as smartphones, iPads, and play-a-longs as teaching aids. Read More

I've been teaching almost as long as I've been playing. By the time I was in high school I had earned the reputation as "the drum guy" and friends would come to me for informal lessons on how to practice and play drums. Some of these students have continued their musical pursuits and have gone on to attend good music colleges and are playing professionally! During my time at college I continued teaching on the side, and since I have graduated and relocated to Portland I have dedicated myself to teaching full-time. Read More

The methods which I primarily use are the Piano Adventures and Alfred piano methods. I like them because they present the material in a logical, fun, and attractive way. I also supplement the method books with music that is tailored to each individual student. I am open to other methods if the student requests. For example, if a transfer student has been working in a different method, I am open to continuing in that method unless I feel that it does not mesh well with my own teaching styles and methods. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student make progress while developing their passion for music. During a lesson, I make corrections based on what I see needs to be improved. I make sure to encourage the student, praising them for their successes. I think it's important to have strong communication during a lesson. I want to know what the students is feeling, and I want them to have awareness of their own body as well. Read More
