I have always enjoyed helping students play better. My private teaching career began in 1978 and continues to the present. It is always more fun for the student it they understand why something is important and what the long term benefits are for them. No question is questioned. We enjoy exploring the Language of Music and the requirements of their instrument. Additionally, I have developed a method for addressing Performance Anxiety that has proven effective in any performance situation. Read More

I generally split lessons into three sections, 1/3 with chords, 1/3 scales, 1/3 with songs, but every student is different, for example, If your goal is to strictly learn chords to sing folks songs over, I will emphasize more chord reading and learning time. If you want to play leads, I will spend more time emphasizing scales to help you learn how to improvise. There are also other excercises we can do like rhythm reading (just with clapping, no instrument) transcription/listening, and harmonic analysis. Read More

I love watching students learn and develop a passion for music. I love to inspire each individual student. I think it’s important to relate to each student in their own way so they each can thrive. I like to set goals during each lesson that are practical, yet give the student a feeling of accomplishment when reached. Goals are important to keep driving you forward and developing your skill. For all experience levels, long tones are essential to a good playing foundation. Making long tones a regular part of daily practice is key to developing a strong sound and extended lung capacity. Beginners focus on embouchure, hand position, correct fingerings, note reading, and basic rhythms. Intermediate and advanced players work on learning major and minor scales, etude studies and a variety of solo clarinet repertoire. Students are encouraged to listen to a variety of professional clarinet recordings of all genres to develop an ear for different clarinet tones and styles. Read More

There are lots of great teaching tools and methods available, and once I have an understanding of a student's current ability level and what they want to work on, I can make recommendations. For wind players, Essential Elements provides a good way to get started on an instrument. I look for ways to incorporate different styles of music from classical to jazz to pop music in addition to the important fundamentals you will learn from a method book. Read More

I have been teaching music & guitar since I was eighteen years old back in my native Colombia. My first job was when I was a freshman at Universidad de los Andes working at the community center of “Telecom” corporation. My duties included to instruct a group class of kids between the ages of 6 to 12 years old through games and songs. This experience determined the following years of teaching during after school hours. Read More

As far as methods, I do not believe that there is one system that will work for every student, and so I try to find the right combination for each individual. For piano students I begin with a combination of Alfred and Faber method books, and also teach different scales for technique. For voice students I try to pick a combination of vocal exercises, classical music and contemporary music based on the student’s unique voice. Students learn best from music they are passionate about. What is most important is finding the right songs for each person. Read More
