2015 - John Philip Sousa Band Award

2016 - CCC Musician Scholarship

Overview:
Hi there! My name is Michelle and I'm a 22 year old aspiring band director. I've been studying music for the last 4 years in college now and have been teaching on the side. I began giving group lessons in 9th grade and as of today, I still do. Now I also teach privet lessons with various middle and high school students. I've been awarded and praised for my playing numerous times as well as grades to show it. I've won scholarships and awards thanks to my playing ability. I will graduate with a bachelor's degree in Music Education as well as a minor in Spanish in the for coming future.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience begins as early as 9th grade. I started teaching middle school sectionals to 7th and 8th graders. I would help with tonal and technical work, as well as their band pieces. Once I began my senior year in high school, I started to lead and teach my high school sectionals. As well as the freshman level band and do their sectionals twice to three times a week. When I graduated high school in 2015, I was hired formally to become the flute instructor for Milwaukie High School's flute section and to work with them once a week. As I gained reputation, I started teaching students privately and now have experience working with over 20 different kinds of middle and high school students. I am able to explain the world of music to lots of kind of brain types! I knew teaching was for me when I hit 9th grade and taught at the middle school, there was nothing more that gave me as much join and happiness than teaching music, especially flute!
METHODS USED
I always start off my very first lesson, (or a very long time since seeing that student) with a piece of their choice to showcase their ability and level of playing and another I hand them to sight read. That way I can assign the right material at their playing level and start letting them know what books they will need to buy for future lessons. When i have heard them play, I go through my gallery of music and pull out tonal, technical, and everything in between to start outlining what we will be working on for months. When I feel as though as they have a good understanding of everything basic on flute, I start to add in a solo and find a location where the can perform it.
LESSON STYLE
I love to push my students to become the best they can in a healthy and positive way! There's nothing worse than spending money on a teacher who only does the bare minimum. I always make sure I give the right amount of work each week to my students to stay busy and to grow on their instrument. I love when there's a deadline or performance date they need to have a piece(s) ready by so I can incorporate other technical things in there that makes everything tie together! Because everybody is different, I will only ever do as much as I see the student can handle. I have learned in the past that a fun and happy environment helps my students grow than a stressful and too strict one. I will always keep in fun while staying on task!
