For beginning students I like to start with proper technique and basic music theory such as reading music and key signatures. Once the student is comfortable with the instrument we will begin to work or more advance techniques and music theory. I use various instructional books depending on the students level and interest in order to teach them theory and keep them interested and enjoying learning. For adults, I like to find out what their goals with music are, whether it is just a hobby, or something they plan on doing professionally and how in depth they are looking to learn, and then guide my instruction accordingly. For Piano students: I teach from Faber and Faber (age appropriate volumes) and encourage a disciplined home practice routine that includes a practice log and weekly goals. Solo pieces added over time. Performances - even if only an in home recital for a few family members and friends - are encouraged about once a semester. I began teaching students while still in high school. I continued teaching students in college with the University of Texas String Project. Upon graduation, I taught programs in both public and private schools, while developing a studio of private students at our home. I have taught private students for most of the past 35 years, teaching all ages from 6 yrs. and up, beginning to advanced. I started taking cello lessons over the summer before 6th grade, and played in the ensemble at my middle school and high school, continuing lessons throughout. I have also participated in solo and ensemble events through the schools. I have never taught before, as it is only now something I have to start doing, but I am excited to begin teaching others. The extent of my teaching only includes helping other cellists with pieces I may have previously played, and working with a quartet on pieces that I already know. Read More
