I started playing snare at 10 and drumset at 14 focusing mostly on rock drumming. I played quads and quints in marching band in high school and bass drum in college. I then studies jazz and percussion at Grand Rapids Community College and Grand Valley State University. I then studied Music composition at University of North Texas. I've been playing music for most of my life. Growing up my whole family would all gather around the piano while my father played. Seeing how inspiring and influential music could be at a young age helped me to develop a passion for it. I am very grateful to share my passion with others through teaching. I specialize in teaching improvisational styles, such as blues, jazz, and funk. I work with my students to create a good balance of a strong technical foundation and creative jamming skills which builds both the intellectual and intuitive sides of music, and helps them become well-rounded musicians. I believe in shaping a lesson around the student. First, I find out what the student wants to focus on more, whether it is notation and musical theory, or learning a few basic chords, strumming patterns and such, to be able to play their favorite songs. No matter their ability, this method of teaching is effective because I find that it keeps the students interested and engaged. My teaching style is to observe each students background. I tend to try approach each student with their own "Language" to make them more easily to understand music theory concepts. Just like what I mentioned before, pure music theory is vague to most people; so I do make examples of implied meaning from other field to make the student catch the logic in their own field knowledge.
