I am a creative and enthusiastic teacher who believes that music is for everyone.  Whether you are a child or a teenager or an adult, whether you are experienced or learning for the first time and whether or not you believe you have "talent", music is for you because music is a quality of human expression.  I was provided traditional, classical training in piano from my earliest years, developing excellent technique and an ability to express myself at the piano that I love to share.  I expanded and deepened my understanding of music further with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music History and Theory at Swarthmore College where I also continued to hone my performance skills.  After that, I had a wonderful adventure as a medical doctor with a speciality in family medicine until music called me back again in the summer of 2002.  One thread that is common to both careers has been my consistent love of teaching which I now understand as my true calling. I started taking private music lessons at age 7 and never stopped! From piano, to flute, and eventually to electric bass and upright bass. Supplemented by music programs through my schooling, I progressed rapidly on upright bass, starting at age 15, and graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance. Starting in high school I began teaching students as young as 6 and as old as 65, providing in-home guitar and bass lessons. My teaching style consists of setting realistic short term and long term goals for my students. I always make sure my students understand the material I am showing them. I encourage them to challenge themselves to achieve their goals they never thought they could achieve. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. I tend to start beginners off with a typical book, usually by Mel Bay or Hal Leonard. I find these books to provide a good basis for music reading and building the required skill set to master their instrument. In addition to those materials, I find music through various on-line sites and from my inventory that students are interested in playing and compliments their abilities. For my adult students, I curtail the lessons to focus on the songs they want to play and understand their goals for playing at this stage in their life. Read More

Sharing how to make music is a passion of mine. I earned my Bachelor's in Piano Pedagogy, and, as of May 2016, my MM in Piano Pedagogy from Texas Christian University. For the last 5 years, I have taught piano private and group lessons of all ages. Both lesson types are beneficial for students, since each has his own learning style. I have been teaching students for about twelve years.  I held graduate teaching assistantships at the University of Florida, Boston University and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute.  In addition, I woas a contracted instructor at a private K-6 school in Chestnut Hill, MA.  My students have won auditions and competitions at both the professional and collegiate levels.  While I am passionate and very serious about the art, I also feel it is important to enjoy playing and studying music. For beginning students, I initially focus on their setup and how to hold the instrument properly. Having this solid foundation helps in the future to avoid injuries and negative habits. After that, I use the Essential Elements books and Suzuki method books as a guideline with supplemental materials. At this point I would also begin introducing solo repertoire appropriate for a first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my teaching according to their level of interest, keeping lessons engaging and fun. Many times that includes playing fiddle tunes, which is very exciting to me too, since I have been involved in Irish culture since I was young.
