Overview:
I'm a passionate, friendly, and motivated instructor who loves working with children and adults of all ages. I love to be able to share my love of music, both through performing and through teaching. I received my master's degree from Northwestern University and since then, I have moved to the Philadelphia area, where I teach through a variety of programs, including Musicopia, the Philadelphia Youth Orchestras, the Music School of Delaware, and the Darlington Arts Center. Much of my group teaching is through El Sistema inspired programs and have also taught privately for the past five years. With music, I have had the opportunity to work with musicians from all over the world and would love to use what I have learned from them with my own students.
EXPERIENCE
I first began teaching in high school, where I would tutor the younger middle school students. As my education progressed, so did my teaching experience. I attended American University, where I received my bachelor's degree in music performance, and then continued to study at Northwestern University, where I received my master's degree. After graduating, I started working at an El Sistema inspired program, called Sistema Ravinia in Chicago, where I was one of the first teachers. Since then, I have lived in New York and more recently, I moved to the Philadelphia area, where I teach group classes and private lessons through a variety of organizations, including the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, Music School of Delaware, Musicopia, the Darlington Arts Center, and others.
METHODS USED
For beginning students, I initially focus on their setup and how to hold the instrument properly. Having this solid foundation helps in the future to avoid injuries and negative habits. After that, I use the Essential Elements books and Suzuki method books as a guideline with supplemental materials. At this point I would also begin introducing solo repertoire appropriate for a first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my teaching according to their level of interest, keeping lessons engaging and fun. Many times that includes playing fiddle tunes, which is very exciting to me too, since I have been involved in Irish culture since I was young.
LESSON STYLE
I feel that nothing is more rewarding than seeing that my student has learned something and from that, develops a passion for music. I try to keep each student's progress at their own pace by setting and keeping realistic goals for my students at their lessons. I am very positive during lessons, because I feel that acknowledging any accomplishment helps keep the student interested and fuels a desire to continue to get better. I try my best to have my student remain inspired and keep wanting music to be a part of their life.

Annija is a great teacher that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in learning more about all aspects of music! She is a very patient teacher that also makes every lesson individual to the student and so fun! She was very easy to communicate with and very flexible with my schedule, I can't wait to take more lessons!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
