I will work with each student to help them understand the fundamentals of jazz, for example, knowing major scales, minor scales, and all of the modes that we typically see in most jazz repertoire. For students that are more advanced we will work on learning how to play over common chord progressions and learn how to play songs found in the Great American Songbook. Carl received clarinet performance degrees from the University of Texas at Austin (B.M.) and from Eastman School of Music (M.M.). He is a current doctoral candidate and Teaching Assistant Graduate Award recipient at Eastman School of Music. His principle clarinet teachers have been Richard MacDowell, Nathan Williams, Kenneth Grant and Jon Manasse. After picking up my first guitar in the year 2001, I knew I had found my life path.
