In my ongoing experience as a student I have learned that drum lessons, or any formal instruction on something artistic, must be representative of the art itself. To sit a young/beginning drummer down at a practice pad all day and force him/her to learn the basics, is to stifle that persons passion and desire to play the instrument. I began taking guitar lessons in 2005 (age 15). When my instructor left to attend Berklee, he told me that I had the ability to teach all of his students, and that I should take his job. So from 20062008 I taught students ages 365 in all the genres listed above. I offered private lessons to some friends and classmates while I went to Berklee. I find that teaching is the best way to help me internalize musical concepts myself, and I get a lot of personal gratification from helping someone overcome their music and creative obstacles. I try to tailor my lessons almost like a Doctor sees a patient. Every student is different, I do think it is important to learn to read music. I love music theory and I emphasize learning to love practicing technique. With my beginner piano students I generally use a Hal Leonard series book, but supplement it with a book of piano exercises. With my guitar students it depends on their age and experience, I use a Hal Leonard method book for youngsters and then begin teaching them songs they identify that they really want to learn.
