My teaching studio is equipped with two drums sets and practice pads to accommodate marching or drum set students.   I also have a full PA and two keyboards set up for piano students and accompanying purposes.  Each student is given an assignment for the week (or specified time) and will then pass off this lesson assignment (barrier) before receiving a new lesson.  Passing off not only includes demonstration of the lesson but also performing with me as I accompany them on the keyboards. For beginning students both children and adults, I typically start with Bruce Pearson's Standard of Excellence books. Once my younger students have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for their first recital performance. Once the adults have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I try to find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction towards that interest, all while keeping the lessons engaging and fun. For both voice and guitar, I begin with evaluation of where the student is. I then discuss with the student to realize what their goals are, and why they want to progress in this field. I then assign daily exercises that the student can utilize to begin to build control and virtuosity with their instrument. My teaching style ranges from student to student. For example I love to see my students develop whether they're coming to me as a beginner, basic, intermediate, or advanced student. If I have a gospel vocal student, I work with them on rifts and runs. If I have a classical piano student I work with them on fingering techniques. I started teaching guitar in High School in 2009, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 8 years. I took private lessons for 7 years from four different guitar instructors, so I know what works and what doesn't. My number one focus as a teacher is keeping my students engaged, and doing my best to ignite their passion for the instrument of guitar.
